Welcome to SPED Code Parent Advocacy Guide

SPED Code Parent Advocacy Guide is for parents of children with special needs who feel overwhelmed and intimidated by the special education system.

Every special needs parent wants to be their child's best advocate. But most end up feeling powerless and frustrated because they don't understand the complex nuances of the legal framework behind special education. If this sounds familiar, you've probably tried reading dense legal documents and joining Facebook support groups. Maybe you've even hired an expensive advocate - but still haven't seen results.

Here's why:

Most parents in special education do one of two things—focus on accepting whatever the school offers without question, or hyper-fixating on small details in the IEP that do not matter in the grand scheme of things.

As a result, they end up missing opportunities their child needs, feeling guilty about not doing enough, and watching their child fall behind academically and socially.

But after 12 years of working in special education, I discovered that parents who understand the system and their rights are able to successfully advocate for their children—without needing expensive outside help.

So, if you want to become a confident special education advocate, but also need clear guidance to navigate the complex world of SPED law, then this newsletter is for you.

Who am I?

I'm Megan, and I've spent over 12 years working in special education, including my current role as a special education administrator in a public school district. Along the way, I've guided hundreds of families through the IEP process and seen firsthand what makes parent advocacy successful.

I started this newsletter because I witnessed too many parents struggle to understand the IEP process and effectively advocate for their children. What began as simple tips for parents in my district has grown into a comprehensive guide that aims to empower parents across the country.

Now I'm sharing everything I've learned about navigating special education law and becoming an effective advocate for your child.

Why subscribe?

Every Wednesday, I send one newsletter that helps you understand special education law without getting lost in legal jargon.

  • No more feeling intimidated by SPED legalese

  • No more confusion about your child’s IEP document

  • No more shelling out tens of thousands of dollars on an advocate who uses bravado to mask a lack of understanding of SPED law and the IEP process

Each issue combines practical legal insights and insider tips from my administrative experience to help you advocate effectively, delivered in a clear, actionable format that takes just 10 minutes to read. These newsletters don't just explain the law, but instead provide real-world strategies to help you ensure a robust plan for your child in every meeting.

I cover everything from Understanding IDEA and Ed Code, to IEP Meeting Strategies, to Effectively Partnering with Your Child’s Providers. Not only do you get clear explanations of special education law, but each issue also comes with the following:

  • "Administrator's Perspective" - insights from the other side of the table

  • Ready-to-use phrases and responses for common situations

  • Action steps you can implement immediately

My goal is for you to find something worth reading in every single edition.

And my promise is that you'll feel more confident and prepared for every special education meeting because I know what works from both sides of the table.
